Buying a computer is a major investment, one that will last you for a few years at least. Today, laptops are far more popular than desktops, and if you are looking to put some money into a notebook, these four tips will help make your buying decision easier:
1. Size
Picking a laptop is all a matter of size. How heavy or light, and how bulky or large it is will decide its portability, and in effect, its range of functionality. You can't lug around a 15 pound behemoth, nor can a tiny 9 inch screen laptop be of much use to you.
Ideally, pick something that has at least a 14 inch screen. If you are willing to sacrifice portability in favor of display quality, pick a 17 inch screen laptop.
Also, note the size of the keys and the keyboard. Your finders must rest comfortably on the keyboard. The smaller laptops in the market today have too tiny keys that make typing for long hours very uncomfortable.
2. Get an External Mouse
All laptops come with a touchpad. Navigating for long hours using a touchpad, however, can be uncomfortable as well as slow. Therefore, when you are buying a laptop, make sure to buy an external mouse. It'll make working on your notebook a thousand times more productive.
3. Wi-Fi/Bluetooth
Most laptops today come with Wi-Fi. A lot of the newer models also come with Bluetooth. Ideally, you should get a laptop that has both these options, considering the amount of time one spends on the internet these days. Without Wi-Fi, you will not be able to log on to the internet from anywhere, and without Bluetooth, you will not be able to transfer files from your cell phone easily.
Although it is getting out of fashion, an infra-red port on a laptop can be quite useful. Look for a model that includes this too.
4. USB Ports
Ideally, your laptop must have at least 4 USB ports. Almost all external peripherals today use a USB port to connect to the computer, and you can use up the ports very quickly. At least 4 ports means that you can attach an external mouse, a printer, a scanner, and a thumb drive to your laptop easily.
